Background
DebaTales is a personal project of a fossil age explorer. I am a classic example of my erratic generation: an Industrial Engineer having so far:
- Helped businesses to grow and produce more goods and services
- Travelled to 80 countries
- Consumed and used vast variety of gadgets, material and resources.
Timing
I booked my first site aimed for storytelling five years ago, autumn 2018. Life took me through various paths – offering more ingredients for tales and giving meaning and direction to writing.
Past decade I have helped organisations and corporations to use less material and not to waste their resources.
Considering the speed of climate crisis and sixth extinction I have realised I am on a too slow path. Hence, to speed the attitude change required to act, I supply fuel for discussion on how to sustainably change our ways.
Storytelling is an ancient form of passing information and teaching.
On this site it will be explored to inspire sustainability.
Agile development
With limited resources I work with Agile principles – improving each stint one area of the site – or my knowledge.
- I started in English – with the “1st 21 stories” – 3 tales / continent, which I wrote Oct-Nov 2023. I began building this site end of November 2023. I collected data and published it as a part of Climate Communication course in the University of Helsinki Jan-March 2024.
- March-May 2024 I studied in the same University more on sustainability and January-April 2024 I learned carbon accounting and calculating LCAs at VAMK – Vaasa University of Applied Sciences.
- Summer 2024 I studied on my own, did other projects and recovered.
- September-October 2024 I expanded the “Learning Corner” from one to ten topics and continued my ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) studies at FIBS – the largest Nordic network of corporate sustainability. I also brushed up the whole site a bit here and there.
At some stage I will possibly translate the site partially to Finnish and Spanish. Eggs in more than one basket ;o)
All stories may not appear in all languages. In such cases English version is displayed, if existing. Over the years I have learned, that life may surprise open hearted – thus probing with three languages.
Finnish is my native – but small tongue (only 5,5 million people). English is obvious, but Spanish is a language of my heart and “La Bandera” in El Zócalo of the D.F. in Mexico makes my heart sing. In Spanish the name of the site also has another meaning ;o)
Aim is to provide material to different levels of environmental education from different angles. There will be both “real life” -stories and fictional tales of imaginative surroundings.
Along all narratives some associated data is presented, so that the learning and discussions do base to scientific facts.

I’d like to contribute and to share my environmental tales / data, how can I do that?
DebaTales starts as one-man project and follows with Agile development and Lean StartUp MVP (Minimum Viable Product) principles. At the moment site building, writing stories and gathering relevant data are priorities. Thus opening case specific emails awaits. Until then kindly contact toni@saanto.fi. At the moment there is no external funding, so all collaboration is voluntary. No charges, no rewards.
Can I use the material on DebaTales in my teaching?
DebaTales is free to use (no costs) in environmental education. This right refers to the material in this site – as it is. Any copying, republishing or any other use anywhere else requires a permit. Do contact toni@saanto.fi if in doubt.
