Climate change is happening, so instead of arguing, let us think how to react sustainably

DebaTales offers free material to environmental education.

Basic idea is simple:

  1. to provide concrete stories to open a topic
  2. to deepen it with data and
  3. to encourage discussion basing to that.

Relearning our “needs”

Post WWII – so past seven and some decades – word “development” has meant believing on continuous growth and science has brought us technological advance and better resistance to diseases.

Undeniable economic improvements have occurred on the cost of nature and the sum of population and continuous growth is equaling to climate crisis and sixth extinction.

Continuous growth +
Population growth
=
Climate crisis +
Sixth extinction

Receipt of Climate Change

All above described is manmade, hence it can be resolved by us, too. Issues are complex and global, so solutions are multiple and required on all fields of life.

However, the system that brought us to this point is founded on two impossibilities:

  1. Continuous growth in a closed system (planet Earth)
  2. Continuous population growth of a single species (human) in a closed system (planet Earth)

To be able to fix this a system wide re-evaluation is needed on individual, national and global levels:

New personal goals

For centuries most homes remained mostly same. Consumption, travel and “getting more” was not necessary.

We must rethink more sustainable ways of pursuing happiness and fulfilment.

New sustainable foundations of societies

There are simply too many people and too many species are vanishing – too fast.

To save the human race we are required to accept – at some point – tipping of the population pyramid.

New terms on using natural resources

Six of nine Planetary Boundaries are currently “on red”. Continuing overusing nature this way is impossible.

We need to determine higher costs of using ecosystem and to improve material efficiency, life-cycles and recycling.

We are the change!

WE are the humankind. We have violated Earth, we can improve our ways.

WE must change our goals and start acting more respectfully to limited natural resources.

WE CAN – AND MUST DO THIS – STARTING TODAY.
